What is Keurig 1.0 and 2.0 comparison

Keurig is a make of coffee machines that have gained popularity in recent years. They have released several great models that conquered the hearts of many coffee connoisseurs around the world.

However, in the meantime, the authors introduced a new line of coffee capsules and designed a new series of coffee machines, known as 2.0. The revolutionary changes concerned not only the technology but the size of the tools.

Such changes were implemented mainly to ease the life of the customers. However, it was also due to the introduction of many regulations that Keurig had to follow to keep up with the progress. 1.0 series is not obsolete.

The authors still support it. These machines can still provide us with great coffee drinks. However, all the novelties and technologies that appear in the machines of the Keurig 2.0 series are not available there.

What is Keurig 1.0?

Keurig Coffee Makers

To put it simply, these are the first coffee machines made by Keurig, which were introduced on the market a couple of years ago. They are still available to purchase.

Some of the models are still peaking at the biggest number of sales on Amazon.

Thousands of positive opinions regarding these gadgets as well as numerous satisfied consumers prove that the quality of these tools is at the highest level possible.

More importantly, the authors themselves still support the machines.

Coffee makers of this series are characterized by simplicity and reliability. Quite often they are known as Classic Keurig.

Classic coffee machines by Keurig 1.0 series allow us to brew and filter our coffee with the drip tray included in the kit. However, some users may find the operation of the device a bit dull.

Though there are only a few buttons to learn, the lack of advanced functions may be disadvantageous. However, the tools from the 1.0 series allow you to fill the cup easily.

You can also choose one out of several capsules available.

Pros:

  • Despite the fact 1.0 series is not new, the machines from that generation are very well designed (sturdy and reliable) and enjoy considerable popularity with plenty of positive opinions.
  • Keurig 1.0 devices are much cheaper, especially if we take into account not only the price of the purchase but also the later costs of use. We can, for example, use cheaper counterparts of capsules that are not compatible with Keurig 2.0 machines.
  • We can use capsules of different companies, which are considerably cheaper than the ones provided by Keurig. It is also compatible with reusable pods.
  • The speed of coffee brewing is very satisfying, it takes only 1 minute.
  • Their huge popularity and long presence on the market result in a huge community that can help in solving possible problems in the future.

Cons:

  • Though Series 1.0 models are still supported by the producer, it is a matter of time (maybe several years) when some or even all coffee makers from the 1.0 series will be abandoned. That marks the end of the manufacturer’s support and the lack of a warranty in the event of failure.
  • No regulations of the strength and temperature of the brew.
  • Due to the lack of touch screens and obsolete technology (the control system based on buttons), they have much fewer functions. For example, it’s not possible to find a series 1.0 Keurig with the option to memorize favorite settings or the function to automatically turn the coffee machine off.
  • 1.0 series is louder than 2.0 models. What is more, these devices characterize by much higher power consumption.
  • The lack of compatibility With K-Carafe pods.
  • 1.0 capsules are one-use only. It means that we create a lot of plastic waste.

What is Keurig 2.0?

KEURIG 2.0: My Thoughts & Comparison

This is another line of products made by Keurig company. They were launched after the 1.0 series, which makes them more modern.

What is more, they offer more functions and options and can be set easily in the way we prefer. Also, they give us many more improvements and the number of flaws that existed in the case of 1.0 models has been reduced to a minimum.

Unfortunately, among many advantages, there is also one, pretty big downside. It is a price. The devices released as a part of the 1.0 series are usually much cheaper both in terms of buying the machine and then purchasing capsules.

As a result of introducing much more advanced options, 2.0 models can offer better management of the brewing method. What is more, there are plenty of new functions to choose from.

We can, for example, use the controls to change the temperature and the strength of the coffee. What is more, they offer compatibility with K-Carafe capsules and give us many more types of pods.

We can also adjust the intensity of the coffee to the size of the cup. Using devices from the 2.0 line is great for those who are in love with a large number of different coffees.

What is more, it is perfect for those who like to experiment with coffee taste.

Noteworthy is the fact that the biggest flaw of this line, which is exclusive compatibility with 2.0 capsules, resulted in very negative feedback from the consumers.

As a result, the Keurig company decided to withdraw from that solution in 2019. The latest models allow us to use capsules designed for both 1.0 and 2.0 models.

We can also choose items prepared by other companies. However, such compatibility concerns only those makers that were released in 2019 or later. Older 2.0 models cannot use 1.0 capsules.

Pros:

  • The size and the look of 2.0 coffee makers. These are compact tools and take much less space than 1.0 devices. What is more, you can find many more variations, including different colors.
  • Most 2.0 models are characterized by a bigger water tank than in the case of the older 1.0 line.
  • Most 2.0 coffee makers allow us to set and then control the strength of the brew and its temperature.
  • Models are compatible with K-Carafe sachets. It allows us to brew very strong coffee.
  • Easy to use touch screen that offers many additional functions, including automated shut down of the device, memorizing favorite settings, and many others.
  • It consumes much less power thanks to different eco functions like for example idle mode. They are also quieter than older models.

Cons:

  • A limited number of capsules that fit. If you used models from the 1.0 line before or you purchased capsules from other producers, then it is highly likely that they won’t fit your Keurig 2.0, which uses only the newest capsules.
  • 2.0 Capsules from Keurig are much more expensive than those offered by other producers.
  • Keurig coffee machines from the 2.0 line are much more expensive than the 1.0 series.

What makes Keurig 1.0 different from 2.0?

How to hack your Keurig for a better cup of coffee

Since both lines were designed and produced by the same company, they look similar. What is more, they share several characteristic traits. However, it is possible to name quite a lot of differences.

In a nutshell, 1.0 models differ from the 2.0 line in terms of coffee control. 1.0 line offers us buttons. In the case of 2.0, we can use a touch screen.

Another difference concerns capsules. 1.0 models take older, smaller capsules. They are disposable, but we can also use capsules produced by other companies. They are also cheaper.

2.0 line, on the other hand, makes use of newer capsules, which are bigger and reusable. Unfortunately, only original products made by Keurig fit most of the 2.0 products. They are also way more expensive than the items for the 1.0 line.

Nevertheless, the company withdrew from the change. As a result, most products that had its premiere in late 2019 or 2020 were compatible with older capsules.

As a result, they are much better and guarantee diversity, both in terms of the size of the capsules and the manufacturer.

Let’s now present an in-depth comparison of the differences between those two lines.

The design of Keurig Coffee Machines over the years

Although the products were prepared by the same company, the models released over the years changed in terms of many details. Models that belong to the 1.0 line were released first.

Now, the difference between line 1.0 and 2.0 is at least 5 years. As a result, the 2.0 models can boast of a more compact design.

What is more, there are plenty of architectural changes and the chance to choose the device in an alternative color. They look smart and present a modern approach to household appliances design.

Moreover, they are equipped with a clear and transparent screen. Sadly, the 1.0 line is much bigger and offers a much more solid, but at the same time more bulky shape.

Though such design was popular back in the days, modern trends are a bit slenderer. What is more, no screen and button-oriented controls make this machine obsolete?

The appearance does not influence the functionality and quality of the device. But if you look for something more stylish that will fit your kitchen, then the 2.0 series is a way to go.

Water tanks and their attributes

2.0 line, which appeared after the 1.0 series, offers us a lot of improvements when it comes to water tanks. First of all, newer models guarantee us a larger capacity.

It is all due to the negative feedback that the 1.0 line gathered. They offered tanks with very poor capacity, which was around 48 oz of water. As a result, people had to refill them very frequently.

Keurig 2.0 offers us tanks, where we can store up to 70-90 oz of water, depending on the chosen model.

Because of the possibility to fill up to 6 cups of coffee, most of the 1.0 models are recommended for domestic use only. 2.0 models are better for office works and multi-family homes.

Cup sizes – 1.0 versus 2.0 in terms of compatibility

Bigger diversity in terms of the choice regarding the type of brew and its quality comes with Keurig 2.0 machines. In the case of the 1.0 line, we can choose only three sizes of the cups.

In comparison, newer models are capable of giving us 10 more settings. Because of that, they are more efficient than the previous series.

Both 1.0 and 2.0 lines use K cup sachets. However, we can prepare other beverages as well (e.g. cocoa, chocolate, and other drinks). Sachets vary in size. For example, 1.0 models use older capsules.

We can also apply products made by different companies. Newer, bigger items prepared exclusively for the 2.0 line just don’t fit.

To add more, newer capsules have a barcode, which needs to be scanned by the Keurig coffee maker to be accepted. Older products and those manufactured by others don’t have it, and as a result, they are rejected.

The newest models received backward compatibility. As a result, we can use both 1.0 and 2.0 capsules. However, said compatibility was introduced in 2019, so most 2.0 Keurig coffee machines cannot be characterized by that trait.

Capsules by other producers and workarounds

A lot of people find it very annoying that capsules for 1.0 don’t work with your latest choice, namely a 2.0 Keurig coffee maker.

The only official way to fix that is to buy a model that offers the backward compatibility we described earlier on. Unfortunately, these are very expensive devices.

A workaround for 2.0 capsules

There is a method that allows you to fit 1.0 capsules to your 2.0 product. However, be advised that this method may damage your coffee maker (to such an extent that the repair costs will be much greater than the value of the product).

What is more, this manner is not recommended for those who value their time. If; however, you wish to try it out, then here is an instruction:

K-Carafe pods compatibility

K-Carafe pod is a new size of pods and sachets prepared for 2.0 line, and it’s compatible only with that series. K-Carafe allows us to brew a significant amount of beverage, up to 30 oz with one use.

It increases the number of coffee cups and the strength that we can brew.

The use of capsules and refillable containers

It is possible to use refillable capsules and containers with 1.0 series models. It not only saves a lot of money but also saves the environment. In the beginning, products of the 2.0 line did not support reusable containers.

Nevertheless, the Keurig company decided to change it, introducing their pods. Sadly, they are compatible only with 2.0 coffee makers. They excel in taste, but they are also much more expensive than the competition.

Coffee brewing settings – 1.0 and 2.0 differences

There are different parameters for coffee brewers as far as these two product series are concerned. 2.0 offers much more options when it comes to adjusting the drink to our preferences.

We can choose the temperature of the coffee and its strength – from a very mild to a strong one.

It is possible to set parameters at 2.0 products in such a way that the coffee cup can be either stronger or milder or poured into a bigger cup or smaller one.

What is more, there is also an option to memorize your favorite settings for the future. Keurig 1.0 allows us to brew coffee in a much smaller quantity to enjoy stronger coffee.

What is more, we can’t memorize our settings.

Keurig 2.0 will fit those who like to experiment with the coffee taste. 1.0 is, on the other hand, much better for those who just want to drink a very tasty, classic coffee in the morning.

Indicators and buttons at 1.0 versus touch screen at 2.0

Another difference regards the construction of the control panel. Older models give us classic indicators that inform us about the brewing process.

We can use buttons to control the brewing process. In most cases, a coffee maker gives us 5. Though the controls are quite easy to comprehend, sometimes the level of complexity is large, and therefore it takes a lot of time to use the device.

In the case of 2.0 lines, we use an LCD touch screen. Some models are even equipped with a color one. It is very intuitive and transparent.

What is even more important, the use of it is very friendly, and therefore we don’t have to waste much time on learning it. In most cases, we can also save our favorite options and then brew the coffee with one button.

Programmable functions for 1.0 and 2.0 coffee machines

Both series offer us programmable functions. The most popular ones are turning on and off the tool automatically. Sadly, only a small number of 1.0 models give us such a possibility.

Much better functionalities can be found in products made later on, during the 2.0 series era. Most of these gadgets are equipped with auto power on and off features.

It brews the coffee for you in the morning, and after 10-30 minutes of inactivity, it turns off.

In Keurig 2.0 there is a technology known as RFID. It reads the barcode on the K capsule, carafe, or pod and then automatically adjusts to the drink from the code.

Advanced settings available only at 2.0 line

Keurig 2.0 offers us exclusive settings and functions, which cannot be found in the case of the older 1.0 series or they are extremely rare to find. These are as follows:

  1. Saving favorite settings – some models provide us with the opportunity to save the coffee brewing settings. Later on, we can simply tap one button and enjoy coffee without any unnecessary adjustments.
  2. Hot water on demand – that functionality makes the coffee machine pour as much hot water into the coffee cup as you set. You can use this function as a replacement for traditionally boiling the water.
  3. Energy-saving – a function that automatically turns off the brewer after 90 seconds of inactivity is a great way to save a lot of energy and, hence, reduce power consumption and our future expenditures. There are of course many other energy-saving options, including standby mode.
  4. The choice of language – we can change the language of settings to English, French, or Spanish. Depending on the model, there are more languages to choose from.

Summary – is it better to pick 1.0 or 2.0?

The ultimate choice depends purely on the preferences of every one of us. We do not know your preferences; we don’t know what type of coffee you like or what expectations you have towards the coffee beverage.

This is why we provided you with an in-depth description of both options and give you a detailed comparison of both 1.0 and 2.0 lines. Thanks to that, your task to choose the perfect coffee maker for yourself or your friend is much easier.

All you need to make the right choice has been already included. To put it short, you should do as advised below:

Learn who should decide on Keurig 1.0:

  • If you want a cup of coffee that will be ready almost immediately.
  • If you care about a cheaper solution and in case you don’t want to be limited to purchase capsules from one company. It is a very budget-friendly option.
  • If you start the journey with coffee brewing and you don’t want to unnecessarily experiment with preparing a coffee.

Then selecting older devices might be a good idea.

Those people will enjoy using a coffee maker from Keurig 2.0 series:

  • You want to influence the brewing temperature and the strength of the coffee.
  • You need a much more efficient coffee machine that will prepare drinks for many people.
  • The price of the device is not the first thing you pay attention to.
  • Experimenting with coffee flavor is something you love to do.
  • You look for a very clear, user-friendly management and the possibility to program many functionalities and settings.

If all the above are met, then the newer option is better for you.
